How to format chart colors, fonts, and borders?

Formatting the visual elements of your chart in Excel can significantly enhance its readability and impact. Here's how to customize chart colors, fonts, and borders:

Formatting Chart Elements:

1. Select the element you want to format: Click on the specific chart element you want to modify, such as a data series, bar, line, axis title, or legend text. You can click directly on the element or use the "Chart Elements" pane on the right-hand side (visible when you click anywhere on the chart).

2. Format options: Once you select an element, the "Format Chart Area" pane will appear on the right-hand side. This pane provides various formatting options depending on the chosen element.

Formatting Colors:

* Fill & Line: Under the "Fill & Line" section, you can change the fill color (background) of the element or the line color for lines and borders. Click on the colored box next to "Fill" or "Line" and choose a new color from the palette or enter a specific hex code for precise color control.
* Series order (for data series): Within "Fill & Line," you can adjust the order in which data series are displayed in the legend and chart by clicking the colored box next to "Series Order" and selecting "Move Up" or "Move Down."

Formatting Fonts:

* Font: Under the "Font" section, you can change the font style, size, and color of the text associated with the element. Click on the dropdown menus to choose your desired font, size, and text color.

Formatting Borders:

* Line: Within the "Fill & Line" section, you can customize the border of the element. Click on the line style dropdown menu next to "Line" and choose the desired line style (solid, dashed, etc.). You can also adjust the border weight and color using the options provided.

Additional Tips:

* Format Painter: If you like the formatting of a particular element and want to apply it to other elements, use the "Format Painter" tool. Click on the "Format Painter" brush icon (located on the Home tab) and then click on the element whose formatting you want to copy. Subsequently, click on the elements where you want to apply the copied formatting.
* Preset color schemes: Excel offers a variety of pre-designed color schemes that you can apply to your entire chart for a cohesive look. Go to the "Chart Design" tab and explore the options under "Change Colors."
* Reset formatting: If you're unhappy with your customizations, you can easily reset the formatting of a chart element. Right-click on the element and select "Reset Format."

By using these formatting options, you can create clear, visually appealing charts that effectively communicate your data insights.
