How to filter data directly from a chart in Excel?
While you can't directly edit the underlying data from a chart in Excel, you can filter the data series or categories displayed on the chart itself. Here's how:
Method 1: Using Chart Filters Button
1. Click anywhere on the chart to make it the active object.
2. Look for the Chart Filters button, which resembles a funnel icon. It's usually located near the top right corner of the chart.
3. Click the Chart Filters button. This will open a pane on the right side of your worksheet.
4. Filter by Values: In the pane, you'll see tabs for "Values," "Series," and "Categories" (depending on your chart type). The "Values" tab allows you to filter data points based on the values they represent.
- Check or uncheck the boxes next to the data series or categories you want to include or exclude in the chart.
- You can also use filter options like "Select All," "Clear All," or "Exclude Blanks."
5. Filter by Series or Categories: The "Series" and "Categories" tabs (if available) allow you to filter based on the specific series or categories displayed in the chart.
- Similar to the "Values" tab, check or uncheck the boxes for the desired series or categories.
6. Click "Apply" after making your selections. The chart will update to reflect the filtered data.
Method 2: Using Data Sort and Filter (For Tables or Underlying Data)
1. If your chart is based on a table: Right-click anywhere on the chart and choose "Select Data" from the context menu. This will open the "Select Data Source" window.
2. Click the "Cancel" button in the "Select Data Source" window. This takes you back to the worksheet without modifying the data source selection.
3. Click on the table associated with the chart (it will be highlighted with a blue border).
4. Go to the "Data" tab on the Excel ribbon.
5. Click the "Sort & Filter" drop-down arrow and choose "Filter."
6. Filter by column headers: Click the down arrow next to the column header you want to filter by. Select the criteria you want to apply (e.g., filter by text, numbers, dates).
7. The chart will automatically update to reflect the filtered data in the underlying table.
Remember: Filtering data directly from the chart only affects what's displayed visually. The underlying data in your worksheet remains unchanged.
