How do I sort data by numbers (ascending or descending) in Excel?
There are two main ways to sort data by numbers (ascending or descending) in Excel:
Method 1: Using the Sort Button
1. Select your data: Click and drag to highlight the entire range of data you want to sort, including headers if you have them.
2. Go to the Data tab: Locate the "Data" tab on the Excel ribbon.
3. Click Sort: In the "Data Tools" group, find the "Sort" button and click on it.
4. Choose the sort column: In the "Sort by" dropdown menu, select the column containing the numbers you want to sort.
5. Set sort order: Choose "Ascending" to sort from smallest to largest or "Descending" to sort from largest to smallest under the "Sort On" section.
6. Sort! (Optional): You can sort by multiple levels if your data has headers in other columns. Click "Add Level" and choose another column to sort by further.
7. Click OK: Once you've selected your options, click "OK" to apply the sort.
Method 2: Using Sort & Filter Options
1. Select your data: Similar to method 1, highlight the data range you want to sort.
2. Right-click anywhere within the selection: A context menu will appear.
3. Choose Sort & Filter: Click on the option "Sort & Filter" from the menu.
4. Follow steps 4-6 from Method 1: The process is identical to using the Sort button, allowing you to choose the sort column, order, and additional levels (if applicable).
By following either method, your data will be sorted numerically, either in ascending or descending order based on your selection.
